The Ciutat Badalona is a classic ketch built in 1929 in Denmark which initially worked in the local trade in raw materials such as minerals and grain. It continued in the Baltic coastal trade until, after some years in dry dock, it began its journey to the Caribbean in the 1970s. One of the secrets of its long life is that it was constructed with fine materials and the best timber, even though it was built in the year of the Wall Street Crash.
In 2006, it was bought by Marina de Badalona with the idea of recovering so that it could symbolise the city wherever it went. The first step was to change its name from Johanne Regina to Ciutat Badalona. It underwent a complete, complex refitting process, but by September 2011 it was ready to hoist its sails.
The boat is intended to become a symbol of the city in the ports where it goes and a centre for many sporting, leisure and cultural activities. Among the projects being planned is to use the impetus of the newly refitted boat to create a traditional sailing school to recover the values of cooperation, teamwork and the personal challenge of this type of sailing.
Marina de Badalona could not offer the boat to the city without the close involvement and coordination of the Association of Friends of the Ketch Ciutat de Badalona, who are crucial in providing a volunteer crew for sailing it under the leadership of Marcel Mongay, who is in charge of maintenance and technical advice.
Ciutat Badalona is sailing once again to represent a seafaring city, collecting the testimony of tradition and looking confidently to the future from its urban port. There, it can be a focal point for bringing everyone with a seafaring background together with those who are completely new to sailing. In the boat’s new role, its scheduled sailings are:
