Description
Raids on our coasts by Algerian and Tunisian pirates were already frequent before the 15th century. With their fast ships, they would appear unexpectedly and sack villages, spreading desolation and death along the coast. In Badalona, fishermen and farmers suffered terrible raids. In Badalona one pirate was particularly dreaded – the corsair Catxidiable – who, on 13 June 1527, was at the centre of one of the most terrifying episodes. That day, 17 pirate ships led by Catxidiable advanced cautiously towards our coast under cover of night. About 500 men disembarked along Camí del Mar, which we now know as Carrer del Mar.
