A SENSITIVE PART OF THE MEDITERRANEAN TO BE PRESERVED

Just off the coast of the counties of El Barcelonès, El Maresme and La Selva, in waters frequented by sailors from this area and this Marina, are the Canyons of El Maresme, known as a SPAMI (Specially Protected Area of Mediterranean Importance). The canyons are very deep and rich in nutrients that attract diverse mammals such as the striped dolphin, the Risso’s dolphin and the fin whale (all included on the Spanish list of endangered species). To protect this area and the prairies of Posidonia (an unusual plant endemic to the Mediterranean of great ecological importance) surviving around Mataró, Badalona Marina recommends following the protocol of good practices for responsible sighting of species and anchoring, fishing and diving included in the Environmental Code of Conduct.

LET’S SAIL RESPONSIBLY

Marine phanerogams are protected plants found in all seas, but Posidonia oceanica, uniquely, is only found in the Mediterranean. The seaweed bed breeding grounds are also very important for fishing. Their preservation is crucial to minimising the effects of climate change and promoting the conservation of species and ecosystems. To sail safely and preserve the marine ecosystems, we need to remember the following advice:

  • Respect the zones and limits established by the authorised seasonal services and the rules in the protected areas.
  • Look for a zone with buoys to anchor your boat.
  • If you can’t get to a zone with buoys, try to find an area with a sandy bottom or a clear section away from the phanerogam prairie.
  • Remember that anchoring in phanerogam prairies is ineffective. The anchor catches in the seaweed and destroys the organisms that form part of the community.

The Government of Catalonia has also established a new tool to provide you with better information about the sea bed. The FanCat app allows you to know where there are plants that need to be preserved whenever you are sailing. Let’s sail more responsibly together! Get all the information HERE.

ENJOY RESPONSIBLY

ANEN campaign to raise awareness of responsible and safe use of jet-skis.
ANEN, the National Association of Watersports Companies, has launched the campaign “Enjoy Responsibly” considering the increase in boating tourism and the greater numbers of users who have found a safe leisure option in this sector, particularly with jet-skis. Use your machine in daylight, check weather information before you go out (and know the terminology), and respect all boats – these are some of the tips and guidelines drawn up so that, despite the increase in user numbers, people can continue to enjoy watersports.
